Did you know that the area where NE Washington State, North Idaho, and British Columbia intersect was, until just recently, the ONLY area within the lower 48 where the Woodland Caribou has always been an indigenous part of the landscape? It's true...whether or not too many people would recognize that fact. Sadly, backcountry motorized recreation has been deemed more valuable than this iconic ungulate species.

Climate change, logging, predation (primarily from wolves and mountain lions), and the constant roar of ATVs and snowmobiles have all taken their toll. Being a high-stress species, the woodland caribou in this part of the world is all but extinct. 2019 marked the last time members of the South Selkirk caribou herd roamed this side of the US/CAN border. At that time, the remaining few were captured and transported north to Revelstoke, BC, and released into a breeding pen for safekeeping. Their future looks bleak, but all they need is for people to take notice and care.
